Cardiac Arrhythmias in the Los Angeles Area
Abnormal heart rhythm disorders are also called arrhythmias. As a variation from your normal heartbeat, typical arrhythmias involve abnormalities of your heart rate, irregularity of beats, sites where electrical impulses originate and/or a sequence of activation of heartbeats.
Arrhythmias and conduction disturbances may cause palpitations, chest discomfort, syncope or myocardial infarction. Examination of your jugular venous pulse waves by Dr. Jay L. Jordan during an echocardiogram in our office may help diagnose your arrhythmias.
Treatments After Your Arrhythmia Diagnosis
After your diagnosis, treatment may include any of the following:
- A cardiac ablation is a catheter-based procedure that includes wires placed through the veins and into your heart. One of these wires is specially targeted to either burn away or freeze away areas of your cardiac muscle that contact electrical short-circuits or abnormal electrical pathways that may lead to heart rhythm disorders.
- Pacemakers are common devices implanted in the shoulder area of patients who have heart rhythms that have become too slow. Pacemakers have wires that are threaded through veins into your heart for monitoring of your heart’s electrical impulses to create more regularly timed heartbeats.
- Defibrillators are implanted in the shoulder of a patient similar to pacemakers. Defibrillators have functions similar to those of pacemakers, but they also have the ability to deliver a high-energy electrical shock to restart your heart in case of cardiac arrest, which is the most common reason patients with heart disease die suddenly. These devices are constantly monitoring you and can act immediately to restore a normal blood circulation without any patient or doctor intervention.
