Chest Pain

Chest Pain in the Los Angeles Area

Chest pain is #1 symptom of heart trouble and heart attack across the United States. As a very common complaint, it can feel like a sharp, stabbing pain, a dull ache or a burning sensation.

Angina is chest pain or discomfort caused when your heart muscle is not getting enough oxygen-rich blood. It may also travel to your neck or back or radiate down either arm. It can be caused by a number of problems or disorders, which may involve your cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, neurological or pulmonary systems, especially your heart and lungs.

There are so many potential causes of angina or chest pain that it may be sometimes difficult to diagnose, but if you are feeling chest pain, don’t wait – seek immediate help by calling 9-1-1. Some of the more serious symptoms of chest pain include:

  • Shortness of breath, which may or may not have anything to do with your heart
  • Abnormal vital signs such a more rapid heartbeat or arrhythmias
  • Confusion or an ashen color
  • Palpitations

When Your Chest Pain Is Related to Your Heart

Most people think that angina or chest pain is the first symptom you’ll feel due to an impending heart attack, but many people who actually have had a heart attack only experienced vague discomfort. However, typical chest discomfort that’s related to an actual heart attack or other heart problem may include:

  • Feelings of chest tightness, fullness or pressure
  • Crushing or burning pain in your arm (but primarily your left arm), back, jaw and shoulders
  • Chest pain that lasts more than a few minutes, stops, then resumes or varies in intensity
  • Shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, leg swelling or sweating
